Alphabet sounds contribute to the pronunciation of the word. These sounds can be divided into two categories like in most languages. These are consonants and vowels. In Hindi we can call them swar i.e. vowel and vyanjan i.e. consonants. Together consonants and vowels make syllables so that the letter can make a proper sound.
If we talk about vowel sounds and consonant sounds then you will be surprised to know there are total 44 sounds in the English alphabet. There are 20 vowel sounds and 24 consonant sounds. There is a complete separate lesson for sounds.
By itself a consonant only represents a sound. For example -b-. B only represents the sound B, but for it to become a syllable it needs a vowel. Add a vowel AEIOU for B to make an alphabet sound. So BA, BE, BI, BO and BU. Similarly with other consonants the vowels join together and make syllables. These syllables are joined to make words. Remember words are not just sounds but sounds that make sense. So BA+T becomes bat which is a word in English language. BE+R becomes ber, but there is no such word in English.
