🧠 Negative Sentences (A1 Level)

🔹 What is a negative sentence?

A negative sentence means “NO”, “NOT”, or something does not happen.

👉 We use not to make a sentence negative.


1️⃣ Negative with “be” (am / is / are)

Rule

am / is / are + not

Examples

  • I am not a teacher.

  • She is not happy.

  • He is not at home.

  • They are not students.

👉 Short forms:

  • am not → (no short form)

  • is not → isn’t

  • are not → aren’t


2️⃣ Negative with action verbs (Simple Present)

Rule

do not / does not + base verb

👉 Use do not with: I / you / we / they
👉 Use does not with: he / she / it

Examples

  • I do not like tea.

  • We do not play football.

  • She does not like coffee.

  • He does not work on Sunday.

👉 Important:

✅ She does not like


3️⃣ Negative with “there is / there are”

Examples

  • There is not a chair in the room.

  • There is no chair in the room.

  • There are no books on the table.

Short forms:

  • is not → isn’t

  • are not → aren’t

  • Be verbs → add not

  • Action verbs → use do not / does not
